Creating the pattern for a new dress design can be fiddly, so Amy Wibowo at the University of Tokyo, Japan, is using augmented reality to make it simpler. Cameras are trained on a tailor's dummy and two tools held by the designer that keep track of alterations to the fabric. As the designer works on the physical dummy, the changes show up on screen as a virtual version. Motion-capture software, called DressUp, can work out the 2D patterns required to let you cut out and recreate the dress in a material of your choice.
