BIOLOGICAL evolution finds creative solutions for reproduction and survival - and so do computers. Evolutionary algorithms are often used by researchers to solve problems and their suggestions can be clever, surprising or just funny. Sometimes an Al solves a task by technically meeting the requirements, while not doing what the researchers had hoped - a bit like talking to a very pedantic, literal person, says Joel Lehman. He and Jeff Clune at Uber Al Labs, and Ousan Misevic at the Center for Research and Interdisciplinarity in Paris, have now collected their favourite unusual solutions (arxiv.org/ abs/1803.03453).
