PEOPLE who eat meat tend not to think about the lives and deaths of the animals they consume. That is a natural psychological defence against some very unpleasant facts. But hiding from facts doesn't change them. Consider the broiler chicken industry, which raises and slaughters 60 billion birds a year. They live for a few weeks, usually in crowded sheds, before being stunned and killed by having their throats slit. Unsurprisingly, there are multiple welfare issues associated with these methods.
