Conserving energy is not only about saving large amounts of power for short periods. Saving small amounts of energy for long periods can be just as significant. For example, 75million video cassette recorders sold annually remain powered up in standby mode, simply to route a signal to the tv. These are estimated to consume 7.5 x 10~9 kWh a year; the output of a sizeable nuclear power station. Rf switches that consume power continuously are also found in mobile 'phones and cellular radio basestations, amongst others.
