For many multinational companies, secondment is an efficient and necessary way of sharing expertise. Industrial secondment has been widely employed in the semiconductor industry, where entire teams have been temporarily relocated to learn best practice so that when a new fab process is introduced, ramp up is as fast and as efficient as possible. However, the benefits of secondment are generally two way and hence they are increasingly gaining profile as a career development opportunity. Aside from offering the opportunity of learning a new language and a broader skill set, the cultural value of a secondment on a CV is seen as a real bonus in an increasingly international job market. One multinational that has long valued the secondment process is TDK. Like many Japanese multinationals, it has regularly placed secondees from Japan in satellite offices around the world, with a view to spreading core technology knowledge outside Japan. However, the successful recruitment of a group of Irish engineers that would be trained in Japan and given the task of setting up a new European office has lead to increased secondments into Japan and between other global TDK locations.
