New Aspects in Neurocomputing

In April 2003, around 100 researchers from all over the world attended the eleventh European Symposium on Artificial Neural Networks (ESANN), which is a well established high-level conference covering a broad variety of fundamental and theoretical aspects of artificial neural networks. This annual conference is organized by M. Verleysen from Universite Catholique de Louvain, Belgium, in an excellent manner. Since a few years, it has become a tradition to hold the conference in the medieval city Bruges, Belgium. The conference is split into special sessions on designated topics in Neuroscience and regular sessions which cover all the aspects of Neurocomputing. All contributions are presented as talks or posters and they undergo a strong reviewing process to guarantee high quality presentations. It is our pleasure that this special issue presents extended versions of the best contributions. Based on the recommendation of the special session organizers and the reviews of the conference papers, the authors have been invited to submit a journal version of their conference papers. All these articles were again thoroughly reviewed by at least two independent experts and, finally, 18 papers out of the submitted articles are now presented in this volume covering a variety of interesting new developments in Neurocomputing.
