A differential pulse-code modulation (DPCM) system along with independent component analysis (ICA) has been developed for secure transmission of images. The main advantage of this approach has its roots in the ability to compress the images that will be securely transmitted. The combined DPCM-ICA system can be designed with varying levels of quantization, however, image quality can be sacrificed for low quantization levels. For example, when an 8-level quantizer is used, some visible distortion can be observed; however, the separation capability is not significantly degraded. Simulation results are presented that illustrate the usefulness of this technique to securely transmit medical images.
