U.S. Census makes big VoIP splash

When the U.S. Census Bureau decided to switch to VoIP in 1998, it was one of the first federal agencies to adopt what was then a bleeding-edge technology. Now, with 6,500 IP phones installed, the Census Bureau is a champion of the flexibility and new features that VoIP has to offer. "It's very, very adaptable," says Rick Swartz, associate director for IT and CIO of the Census Bureau. "We've been integrating a lot of new features. We've deployed videoconferencing along with IP phones. The biggest plus is that we're well positioned for the future. If we'd gone with PBXs, we'd be frozen."
