Mention the word "grid" and most IT executives probably think of thousands of CPUs crunching numbers for data-intensive applications such as seismic modeling and drug discovery Increasingly, however, grids are being considered as platforms for creating more flexible, efficient data center architectures. As the GridWorld gathering next week marks the 10th anniversary of the open source Globus Toolkit, the focus will be on the growing interest among enterprises in grid computing. At the conference, which runs Sept. 11-14 in Wash- ington, D.C., a number of enterprise grid users, including Wachovia Bank and eBay will talk about their use of grid technology to support next-generation data centers.
