The RBOCs are in a fight for their lives. By creating so-called triple-play services, the RBOCs are positioning themselves to recover lost revenues and retain customers. But getting to the point of offering territory-wide services can be a big financial gamble. Making the wrong assumptions about questions of cost, which FTTx method to deploy, and how many months until payback, could mean the difference between ultimate success or failure. The economics of OpEx and CapEx expenditures and savings, and customer take-rates must be carefully considered. Early experiences of independent telcos have provided a glimpse into take-rates and suggests that FTTN has a very fast payback, a little more than a year, compared to three years for FTTC and over four years for FTTP.
