We tested smart Web application monitoring products in our Syracuse University Real-World Labs~(~R) using the IBM WebSphere infrastructure in our NWC Inc. business applications lab, in Green Bay, Wis., as a guinea pig. We specified that entries must collect, process, display, alert on and distribute performance information about Web applications and their infrastructures, including the switches, routers, load balancers, systems, databases, Web application servers and clients. Although we put a premium on monitoring, we also stressed ease of management and data presentation with enough format flexibility to be useful to IT and business folks. Service-availability information, for example, is key for business owners, while system admins need more insight into the service topology so they can diagnose and fix service outages before they affect the bottom line.
