It's an obvious question, yet it's frequently overlooked. It's a simple question, yet it often requires a separate vendor team to explain it. It's a small question, yet it can make the difference between a good IT investment and a bad one. "Do you want a maintenance contract with that?" Whether buying software licenses for an entire enterprise or one router for an office, IT purchasers are confronted with a dizzying array of tiered service offerings, ranging from basic Web support to complex contracts that include customized service levels and dedicated on-site personnel. Many offerings are so complex the vendor's sales rep can't explain them—a support rep must outline the options and negotiate the maintenance contract.
