Almost three years ago, when the editors of NETWORK COMPUTING assembled their first across-the-board assessment of Cisco Systems' corporate and technology strategies, the world's largest networking vendor was still shaking off its dot-com-era hangover. In the 12 months prior to our story, Cisco had posted a $1 billion net loss, laid off thousands of employees and was re-evaluating its acquisition strategy. Today, Cisco still isn't partying like it's 1999, but it is firmly on its feet and on the prowl. The company is on pace to announce twice as many new products this year than in any other in its 20-year history, most of them cultivated organically. Still, Cisco isn't done stretching its horizons. The company says it will move into four to six new technology markets over the next several years-in fact, it has already identified two of them, though it remains mum on the specific direction and timing.
