Remember when only doctors wore pagers? Or when checking server status meant dialing into your network by modem, then using a remote console to connect to each box? Today, the only thing you need to communicate with IT co-workers, at any time and from any place, aside from the technology itself, is a company willing to support you. Hard-core IT folks have an always-online mentality. How many of us check e-mail after hours or work on business projects at home? When I log in to the ACME network on weeknights and weekends and bring up my instant messaging client, I regularly see many of my IT staffers online. For us, as for many of our peers at other companies, IT is our work, hobby and personal life.
