When Blaster, MyDoom, Slammer and Welchia first wriggled their way past remote hosts, VPNs unwittingly helped them infiltrate otherwise protected systems. Lesson learned: You must protect all entry points. Whale Communications' SSL VPN gateway, e-Gap Remote Access 3.0, lets you do just that, creating SSL-encrypted sessions for both HTTP and non-HTTP applications. Its GUI offers policy-compliance verification and integrated support for graded and form-based authentication-a marked improvement over version 2.5 (see "The SSL Alternative," ID# 1423f3).
