When working in IT, you'll occasionally find yourself pushing for a solution to a problem others can't see. Such was the case recently here at ACME when we asked senior management to approve the purchase of an encryption system for our tape backups. The IT security rule is to protect data at rest and data in motion, but that rule alone wouldn't be enough to get this system approved. Because our backup data hadn't been compromised, we knew getting the purchase approval wouldn't be easy—our business case would have to be airtight. Our request for this new technol-ogy was driven by a series of events. First, several other organizations in ACME'S industry had undertaken back-up encryption projects. Second, several major companies had recently suffered black eyes for losing private data. Fi- nally, our data-center manager, Marvin Mipps, had collected compelling infor-mation on backup encryption at wire speed at the recent NetWorld+Interop conference and shared it with our IT security manager, Bucky Rogers.
