AMD Ups the Ante

In a move that will span most of its 64-bit processor line, AMD has released the first Opteron CPUs offering dual-processor performance on single-socket systems. Based on the vendor's 939- and 940-pin socket designs, the new chips will let resellers easily double the processor density on many multiprocessor systems with only a BIOS revision. AMD has led the charge in affordable 64-bit computing since releasing its first Opteron processors in 2003 and the popular Athlon 64 and Athlon FX consumer lines shortly thereafter. The first new dual-core Opterons fall into two categories: The 1.8-GHz Model 865, 2-GHz Model 870 and 2.2-GHz Model 875 are designed for four- to eight-way servers, and Models 265, 270 and 275 are geared for dual-socket 940 workstations.
