This review is a little different from our usual head-to-head model. Our goal is to provide an overview of the technological options for storage security and outline the difference between encryption of data in motion and data at rest, and how the two impact your storage and data networks. We'll discuss a range of file-level encryption, database-level encryption and access-control products, but we're not issuing a report card nor an Editor's Choice award. We asked Brocade Communications Systems, Cisco Systems, Decru Systems, Ingrian, Kasten Chase, McData Corp., NeoScale Systems, Protegrity and Vormetric to bring their products into our Green Bay, Wis., Real-World Labs~® to let us evaluate where each fits in a storage security architecture and the administrative costs of using different classes of products. Only Vormetric couldn't participate because of a change in its executive management that occurred during our review.
