Building a SAN Castle

One of ACME'S top projects this year has been evaluating a new storage-area network environment. As I mentioned in last month's column on server consolidation, we had been getting by with a few NAS (network-attached storage) devices—they worked well but were not enterprise-quality. We needed a true SAN. Our network manager, Dirk Packet, and our top network engineer, Eugene Wright, began the process by doing some research. We started with what we knew, with what our people had seen in other organizations and with what we had heard from our peers. We subscribe to NETWORK COMPUTING and to some of the analyst services, so we checked with them as well. In the end, just about all our data pointed to a single vendor.
