Perhaps your IT environment resembles that of NNW Inc., our business application lab in Green Bay, Wis., that's modeled as a fictional widgets manufacturer: We've grown beyond our capacity for one instance of an application server to provide Web services for all our customers and partners, and though we could allocate a second server for another instance, we haven't budgeted for a third. We need an application server that can scale across two systems, with one doing double duty as an application server and the other controlling the Web server for load balancing. Because many major vendors say their products support such a configuration, we erroneously believed this setup would provide the scalability we desired.
