Aware of the difficulties associated with identifying the vague literary tendency known as 'Postmodernism' with contemporary post-Franco Spanish literature, we endeavour to analyse 'postmodern' features – if indeed there are any – in Juan García Hortelano's novel Gramática parda (1992). Although one might at first sight be encouraged to classify this work as a Postmodernist novel, one would be jumping to conclusions and would merely be imposing foreign postmodernist models on Spanish literature. A consideration of a number of techniques and philosophical reflections to be found in serious international studies attempting either to define Postmodernism in Western literatures or to focus Postmodernism on specific examples in post-1975 Spanish literature leads us – in spite of the efforts of those who believe the opposite – to conclude that the concept of Postmodernism is of relatively little importance in Spanish literature written in the period after Franco's death.
