Le Shom (Service hydrographique et océanographique de la Marine), héritier du Service hydrographique français créé en 1720, est maintenant un établissement public ouvert tant au niveau national qu'au niveau international. Il joue un rôle important au sein de l'OHI (Organisation hydrographique internationale). Étant membre de 8 des 15 commissions hydrographiques régionales, il entretient des relations avec tous les États côtiers. Pour répondre aux besoins opérationnels, il conduit des relevés dans toutes les mers du globe et peut diffuser partout ses cartes électroniques (ENC). Parallèlement, il continue à entretenir sa collection de cartes papier. Il est aussi sollicité pour fournir son aide (levés hydrographiques, formation du personnel, travaux divers) à différentes organisations maritimes nationales ou internationales. Le présent article donne quelques exemples de telles actions.%The Shom, successor of the French Hydrographic office established in 1720, is now a public organisation open to both national and international levels. It plays an important role within the IHO (International Hydrographic Organisation). With a seat in 8 of the 15 regional hydrographic committees, the Shom keep close contacts with all coastal States. To meet operational requirements it carriers hydrographic surveys in all seas worldwide and can circulate its electronic navigation charts (ENC) everywhere, while continuing to maintain its collection of paper charts. Frequently, the Shom is approached by different national or international maritime organisations in need of some help (Hydrographic surveys, training of personnel or other works). This papers gives some examples of such actions.
