There is a clear trend for MPA developments from existing aircraft types, whether they are large platforms or smaller business jets. All the aircraft mentioned here were initially designed for transport or passenger roles and have been fitted with special equipment and weapons to convert them to the MPA role. Open architectures mean that a variety of sensors, sometimes from different manufacturers, can be integrated to form mission systems thus allowing flexibility of choice for individual nations to equip their platforms to provide for their specific maritime patrol requirements.
