After a brief stop at Rota Naval Base in Spain on 2 February, ITS Cavour arrived in Norfolk Naval Station, Virginia, on 13 February. Ahead of her deployment, Naval Forces spoke to her outgoing commanding officer, Capitano di Vascello Marco Casapieri, who took the carrier through her modification and subsequent work-up period, prior to her Ready for Operation (RfO) deployment. Back in October 2010, the Italian Italy begun the planning process to modify the carrier ITS Cavour to operate the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning Ⅱ STOVL (short take-off and landing) fighter aircraft.
