An amphibious landing operation is a tough mission. It requires adequate means to bring an embarked landing force to an adversary's shoreline. Large amphibious assault ships are continuing to play a key role within this concept. They are the back- bone of any large-scale amphibious landing operation. Naval planners recognize that large. WW2-style amphibious operations arc a thing of the past. The Commandant of the US Marine Corps, General David Berger, just recently declared that "large-scale forcible entry operations followed by sustained operations ashore" are impossible against great powers (Russia and China) and problematic even in case of near-nuclear rogue nations (Iran and North Korea). He added that "the days of massed naval armadas nine miles offshore from some contested feature are lorm over."
