Russian Navy to receive additional landing ships

Following the commissioning of the first Projekt 11711 (Ivan Gren class) landing ship Ivan Gren (135) in 2018 and the launching of a second unit, Petr Morgunov (117), in May 2018, the Russian Navy is about to acquire two or three larger landing ships of the modified Projekt 11711 design. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu announced on 9 April 2019 that the fleet would receive two new ships with an increased displacement and the capability to carry Kamov Ka-52K attack helicopters. The new hulls, named Vladimir Andreyev and Vasiliy Trushin, were laid down at Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad on 23 April 2019. It was informed that their delivery to the Navy is scheduled for 2023 and 2024, respectively. With a displacement of 8,000 or 9,000 tonnes and fitment of four 16D49 turbo-diesel engines (instead of 10D49 diesel engines fitted to the Ivan Gren class), the modified Projekt 11711 amphibious ships will be capable of carrying up to 13 main battle tanks or 36 armoured personnel carriers plus 300 marine soldiers.
