How might submarine communications evolve? It may seem disingenuous for a platform that prizes stealth and discretion, but as Saab observes, modern submarines have an increasing role to play not only on their own but as a communications hub for other platforms and systems. Some examples of the capabilities being examined by Saab include tactical routing capabilities for network-centric operations, improved SATCOM and cognitive radio, where software-defined transceivers exploit advances in artificial intelligence, which allow them to sense the local electromagnetic environment and alter their behaviour.
