Effectively countering the range of surveillance and targeting sensors in today's naval battlespace requires a comprehensive approach beginning at ship design and continuing through at sea operation. Stealth, screening and deception techniques used together can go a long way toward enhancing ship survivability. Given the increasing effectiveness of threats, the capabilities they provide have become mandatory to mission success. Active countermeasures to distract incoming threats like ASMs or ASCMs play an important role within this scheme. Often complementing other shipboard self-defence weapons, they have not had their day.
