Undergraduate engineering and materials science students who have taken a solid mechanics and basic materials science course and are interested in the failure investigation process. Most undergraduate courses in engineering only lightly cover failure (and how to prevent it). In addition to the lucid explanations of how these steel parts failed, the appendices show sample failure analysis reports. These reports are helpful for a number of reasons; the most beneficial being how failure analysis information is organized and presented in a logical fashion.
