"WHERE ARE THE AIRCRAFT CARRIERS?' For decades-when a crisis emerged some-where on the globe-this was the first question a US president asked his national security and military advisors. That question is still posed today. However, increasingly it has morphed into, 'Where are the expeditionary strike groups?' The reason is clear. These naval expeditionary formations-built around a large-deck, tactical air-capable amphibious assault ship (LHA/LHD); an amphibious transport dock (LPD); and a dock landing ship (LSD)-have been employed extensively for a wide array of missions short of war. And when tensions degenerate to hostilities, these forces are the only ones likely able to provide the US military with a forcible-entry option. The America (LHA-6) class amphibiousassault ships-increasingly forming the centrepiece of these strike groups-will therefore be right at the heart of future US naval operations.
