Vessels are traditionally designed optimized for a single condition, normally the contract speed at the design draft. The actual operating conditions quite often differ significantly. At other speed and draft combinations, trim optimization plays an important role during the design of the ship as well as during ship operation at sea. By studying different trim configuration of the vessel, the designers will be able to provide the captain with the best configuration for trim at specific draft and speed. This will reduce fuel consumption and reduce operation cost. Nowadays, the development of computational resources gives the designers a powerful method to calculate ship resistance; it is Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD). This paper will present the study on the trim optimization of US Navy Combatant, DTMB 5415 using CFD method. The result of study is compared with towing tank experiment result. The factors affecting to the ship resistance with different trim configuration are also analyzed. At the end, the authors also give some guidelines and recommendation for designers for trim optimization study and other constrains need to be taken into account during trim optimization.
