摘要

Loess originated as an aeolian sediment during glacial and interglacial times, and covers vast areas of the land surface of the earth. Its rock magnetic properties are controlled by ferromagnetic minerals which were blown in as dust load or formed after deposition due to biological activity during pedogenesis in warm and humid climate periods. The natural remanent magnetization of loess sediments in China has recorded the well-known polarity history of the geomagnetic field during the past 2.5 million years, and hence can be used for accurate dating. The contribution of pedogenic susceptibility can be evaluated from a comparison with the purely wind-blown ~(10)Be concentration. This pedogenic component closely parallels paleorainfall, so that regional precipitation history during the Quaternary can be derived.
