Children of the Streets

By whatever name, children forced to work on city streets find ingenious ways to survive. In the Philippines they pray in churches on behalf of customers. They hunt for scrap metal in the slums of Senegal. In Asia, Latin America, and now Eastern Europe, they sell candies and cigarettes, shine shoes, wash car windshields, and scavenge through garbage dumps.'These are the more fortunate ones. Others are exploited by pimps and criminals who turn them to prostitution, drug dealing, and theft.
