In his new volume, Imagined Worlds, Freeman Dyson, following in the tradition of two of his heroes, novelist H. G. Wells and biologist J. B. S. Haldane, gives us a cautionary vision of where science and technology are taking us in the next century. A theoretical physicist at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, Dyson is known for his work on the theory of quantum electrodynamics. But through his books Disturbing the Universe and Infinite in All Directions, he has become even better known for his creative speculations on subjects ranging from space travel to extraterrestrial civilizations.
