Search for the Snub-Nosed Monkey

China's three species of snub-nosed monkeys—with their delicate, upturned noses and oversized pink lips—are favorite exhibits at that nation's zoos, and Chinese advertisers use the animals' images to sell everything from cigarettes to laundry detergent. Unfortunately, the affection of the Chinese people for these beautiful primates (sometimes known as golden monkeys) hasn't kept them from becoming endangered by hunting and habitat loss. Efforts to protect the animls have been hampered by lack of knowledge about them: one of the earliest nature reserves to protect the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (a species endemic to the province's Yunling Mountains) held none.
