Lapita Voyage Comes to an End

On March 16th the 11 m Ancient Pacific Double Canoe, 'Lapita Anuta' 'landed' at tiny Anuta (11° 37' S, 169° 51' E - the island featured in the Bruce Parry BBC program 'Tribe', 2008), crashing through the surf with a tribe of sturdy islanders dragging her up the steep beach to safety, with Hanneke Boon steering the boat for the last time. A short film of this landing on Anuta can be viewed on YouTube (search - 'Lapita Anuta'). James Wharram gave up his bunk on the last 200-n.m. leg of the journey. His Polynesian crew, knowing the difficulties of landing at Anuta, had suggested that he should jump into the sea prior to landing.
