The usual story of cultural diversity, especially in America, concerns the addition of a new culture brought by a new group of immigrants or isolated natives to the mixture of cultures already present. Sometimes we are clever enough to notice the emergence of new cultural forms compounded of separate old or new cultural systems. This view of diversity reinforces an understanding of a culture or sub-culture as an internally consistent single thing.
