Insight on Colombian Landfills

My 22 years in the solid waste industry did not prepare me for this: several months of fragrant municipal solid waste (tens of thousands of tons), uncovered, at a landfill in the achingly beautiful Colombian countryside. On June 10-14,I visited Colombia as part of SWANA's landfill training and capacity building project. This multi-year project, funded by a U.S. State Department grant, is intended to provide landfill managers and governmental officials in Colombia with training on how to run and regulate disposal facilities in a more environmentally pro- tective manner. The project will culminate with a week-long Training Center in Bogota, Colombia, in June 2020.
