Materials science research is usually driven by industrial and commercial re- quirements, particularly in the side and increasing field of gas sensing and moni- toring, where applications range from domestic gas alarms and medical diag- nostic apparatus to safety, environmen- tal, and chemical plant instrumentation. Much of this work is concerned with Physical realizations such as surface and Bulk acoustic wave (SAW and BAW) Devices and quartz microbalances, and With optical methods such as nondis- Persive infrared (NDIR) instruments, all Of which depend in part on materials Properties.
