We have briefly described the current state of a wide range of inorganic materials where some element of structural disorder gives rise to, or is critical to, their unique property and function in many applications of enor- mous technological interest. We have mainly limited the discussion of the various classes of materials to these unique features, describing some of the associated structural details together with our perspective on future advances.
