In 1966, Congress passed the National Historic Preservation Act. That created the National Register of Historic Places, which puts those plaques in front of important old buildings. The National Park Service administers the program, and the register now covers more than a million properties. But what about historic cars? Enter the Historic Vehicle Association. Founded in 2009, with support from Hagerty Insurance, the HVA's mission is "the celebration and preservation of national automotive heritage." The HVA is America's first organization to initiate a national agenda for automotive heritage, and it serves as the United States' representative body for the Federation Internationale des Vehicules Anciens.
