Great photos in the great outdoors

For most of us, getting the right lighting is the greatest challenge we face in photographing a model railroad. It can be tough to get even lighting, correct color, and realistically sharp shadows. Arranging the proper amounts of direct light, fill light, and background illumination are daunting tasks, and getting the foreground and background shadows correctly aligned when multiple lights are used is tricky. All these problems become far less daunting when you shoot your photos outside. After all, there's plenty of sunlight, the light is always the right color, and daylight throws realistic shadows. Of course, it's not practical to take a built-in layout outside, but a lightweight diorama is relatively easy to take along - and with the great outdoors as your background, your photos can be stunning!
