Logging the Southern pines

My 1910 Fernwood Lumber Co. model railroad concept began when I fell in love with the Bachmann On30 Shay locomotive when it was announced about 10 years ago. Even though I had a complete, modern-era N scale layout in part of my basement, that was now an old love. After acquiring the Shay, I needed a layout to run it on. An Internet search revealed that one of these 14-ton narrow gauge Shays had been sold to Isaac C. Enochs, owner of the Fernwood Lumber Co. (FLC) in Magnolia, Miss., just before the turn of the century. I also found a history of the railroad, and two other modelers who were contemplating building models of it.
