Geared locomotives got their due

In the logging world with its light, cheaply built track, uneven roadbed, and steep grades that twisted and wound through rugged territory, side-rod locomotives had difficulty maneuvering loads as they struggled along the tracks. Something different was needed. Ephraim Shay thought a geared-truck locomotive might be more practical, and went to Lima (Ohio) Machine Works with a design idea to solve the problem.
