Readers may recall that about two years ago I described the fitting of ball screws to my Wabeco mill. I replaced the original Acme screws because after a couple of years of heavy usage (several hours every day) the X and Y screws were showing a small amount of wear over the central portion. The screws were still essentially perfectly OK and would have given years more service. Being somewhat of a perfectionist and also fascinated by the concept of ball screws I decided to make the change. Two years on what has been my experience of ball screws and was the exercise worth all the effort? In general, the answer is a qualified yes.
