Lathe Spider

The gadget on the left of Photo 1 was made at the end of 1969, shortly after I bought my first metalworking lathe (a Myford ML7). The purpose of the device was simply to fit in the No.2MT headstock bore, with its front 'web' sitting inside the three-jaw scroll chuck. In this position, a disc or ring-type component, previously machined (or known to be flat) on one face could be placed against the web such that its front face protruded sufficiently far out of the chuck jaws to permit machining of the front face parallel with the back, as shown in Photo 2.
