Visit to Newall Measurement Systems

In my articles (MEW issues 111 and 112) "A self-build DRO using Chinese scales", I briefly described a two axis Newall Microsyn™ Linear Encoder system fitted to my Chester 626 vertical mill. Following publication, Newall''s Technical Director, Dr. Mark Hudman made contact through the Editor and invited me to visit their factory in Leicester to see how their scales are manufactured and tested. This article reports on that visit and gives an insight into a company with a unique measuring system. I have concentrated on Newall products that are likely to be applicable to the home workshop mill or lathe.
