Until recently most mills were fitted with Acme screws and nuts, which need very little maintenance apart from regular lubrication. As the mills are used manually, any backlash in the screws is easily compensated for during operation. The same cannot be said for the ball screws and nuts that need to be fitted to CNC mills. The computer programmes that operate CNC machines require that the backlash in the screws is constant along the length of each screw as well as being constant with the passage of time. Any change in the magnitude of the backlash will significantly affect the accuracy of the work done on the machine.
