The raw materials were short pieces of 1in. and 1/2in. diameter silver steel, an offcut of 3/4in. steel hexagon and a 1in. (25mm) M6 or 6BA cap screw (photo 1). The exact dimensions don't matter except that the punch needs to be dead on size and the hole in the die slightly oversize. The body of the punch is just about 7/16in. of 1in. diameter silver steel. This needs to be drilled and, ideally, reamed 1/2in. - a sliding fit on the smaller stock. Face both sides of the resulting ring to give sharp edges to the hole, but break the outer edges of the ring to make sure the punch is comfortable to handle.
