IMPROVEMENTS TO THE MINI-LATHE TOP SLIDE

Photographs 1 and 2 show the improved cross slide in the normal mode and in the extended travel mode respectively. The range of travel is extended from 55mm to 80mm with at least two gib screws pressing against the dovetail. This is more than enough to cut an MT2 taper. The photos illustrate the principles of the improvement. In the normal mode the bearing is very close to the top slide and it essentially acts in the same way as an unmodified top slide does and is suitable for making heavy cuts. In the extended mode the bearing is moved back by an extension plate.
